Bleg: A question about internal polling
I have read over and over about pundits theorizing (rightly or wrongly) about how the Obama campaign may (or may not) be panicking (or not panicking) over their internal polling numbers.
My question is this, because I truly don't know: What characteristics do 'internal' polls have that make them different from the many polls we are always reading about in the news?

I might suppose the internal polls do away with the leading questions and force a response from the "don't know" crowd.

They've lost their female constituency, which is (was) their major voting block. Millions of PUMAs backing McCain/Palin
This is why even the national polls are better for McCain/Palin than they seem.

And despite the seeming great fundraising effort in August, the dems have only 77 million going into September, with unexpected battleground states like Minnesota (blue since 1972), suddenly being a dead heat. The dems will not be able to raise the money that they need. Even the downticket races are in jeopardy for them now. Amazing. What a colossal mistake by Oblah blah in not picking Hillary.

Ohio is firmly in McCain's camp now.
I didn't think that the Obamessiah could pick Hillary. He's been so insulated from reality that he believes his own bullshit and thought that his wishes were all that mattered and she does not bow and scrape as he insists.
I wouldn't say he's down and out, and the rumor is that the NYT has some October surprises about Palin. Which could be interesting. Did you ever think that you would witness the decline of the Paper of Record into utter irrelevance?
It's good for nothing other than local, i.e., New York, news.

I would have to guess, based solely on the theory of utility, that it will be the poll best designed for predicting the election. All other polls have conjoined reasons: paid for by one party, touted by another, meant to sway voters. There is a theory that advertising sells mainly advertisers. Zogby sprang to national attention after being very close in a presidential election. Now Zogby is a brand.
An internal poll, if it's not one that's released, would be the only poll with one purpose only and that would be accuracy.
