Death toll in Iraq is one-half that of Chicago
An estimated 123 people were shot and killed over the summer. That's nearly double the number of soldiers killed in Iraq over the same time period. In May, cbs2chicago.com began tracking city shootings and posting them on Google maps. Information compiled from our reporters, wire service reports and the Chicago Police Major Incidents log indicated that 123 people were shot and killed throughout the city between the start of Memorial Day weekend on May 26, and the end of Labor Day on Sept. 1.
According to the Defense Department, 65 soldiers were killed in combat in Iraq. About the same number were killed in Afghanistan over that same period.
In the same time period, an estimated 245 people were shot and wounded in the city.
Maybe we should send in a Surge of community organizers.

So comparing crime-related deaths in Chicago to the deaths of our fine young men in the desert makes everything better for us?

No, it doesn't make everything better for us; but it makes for a really exciting office pool!!

I just pointed it out because it was such a...you know...grim milestone.

All this time I was thinking that all these soldiers were dying. When ONE US CITY has a higher death toll than a WAR zone, is dumbfounding. And let alone a GUN FREE zone (its illegal to posses handguns for law abiding citizens). The most gun free zone is the most deadly, even more deadly than a war zone.

"I am not persuaded that 20,000 additional community organizers in Chicago is going to solve the neighborhood violence there. In fact, I think it will do the reverse."
