Melanie Phillips on Sarah Palin
Melanie Phillips is an author, and blogger, for The Spectator, a Tory-libertarian British magazine. It is perhaps the best written and edited magazine of decent circulation that I read.
I have maintained for years that there is something seriously wrong with the left, which is shown by their viciousness, self-love, clannishness, and eternal love of totalitarianism. (This is, I suspect, why they will not condemn Islamism, but that's for another day.) I feel it comes from the embrace of moral relativism which destroys ethics, to have them replaced by tastes.
Ms. Phillips is, as is usual, less theoretical than I am, and here is a paragraph from her post:
But there's a deeper reason for the foaming vituperation of the left at Mrs Palin's candidacy. It is the same reason that they lash out at all those who are not on the left: their profound lack of confidence in their own belief system. At some subterranean level, they know they are wrong and that they cannot defend their own position. Which they simply cannot bear. This is because the left is always correct, everyone else is a conservative and therefore if they are wrong about anything they will also be -- a conservative! They'd rather pull out all their fingernails. Which is why they are so vicious: instead of reasoned argument with their opponents they resort to demonisation, intimidating and browbeating any opposition or dissent to shut them up altogether.
The post, in its entirety, may be read here.
[From the Site Admin: At the end of the article linked above there is this:
Maybe she'll [Palin] be found to have presided over a mafia cartel of illegal moose-slayers while in a polygamous marriage to a creationist abortionist who raped his mother.
Question: Wouldn't she still be, technically, a "community organizer" of sorts?]

Thank you from me too Theo !
"The idea that a conservative may be an attractive, youthful, smart and principled, funky grizzly bear-hunting beauty queen doubling up as Elliot Ness doesn’t just rip apart the Democrats’ electoral strategy but the core belief of the left that they are uniquely good and everyone else is universally bad."
What a delightful read !
Sarah and this writer ROCK !

"there is something seriously wrong with the left, which is shown by their viciousness, self-love, clannishness, and eternal love of totalitarianism". I would add craven desire for power at any cost, even trashing our military and hoping we lose.

Kelly, let me modify. I said self-love and ought to have said self-regard--there's a difference. Notice how these are the people who are always apologizing for being Americans. I think that they love their own side, their own sort, the people who share their tastes du jour, but I'm not sure that they don't actually hate themselves. They don't stand for anything other than their lust for power at any cost. If you stand for something then you can be proud, but it's a selfless sort of pride. It's not all about you and with these people it's all about them. They just can't understand the military, who speak an ethical language that they are deaf to.
I'm quite convinced that they love totalitarianism because a lot of them figure that they can be in on the take, telling people what to do. But also some of them want to be dominated. I've done some reading on this which bears some explication.

"Craven desire for power?"
"Eternal love of totalitarianism?"
Look up the words "craven" and "totalitarianism" and see if you'd like to modify that, Kelly Austin Personal Trainer.
The very word "Democrat" is derived from the concept of desiring a democratic process, the exact opposite of a dictatorship.
To be craven is to be abjectly fearful, without courage. The active desire for power cannot be linked to that word effectively.
Don't be one of these people who throw words around without thinking; political debate is not a paintball game.

If I were a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle, now I'd say "Kobwanuga, dude!"
