            <title>More polling delights</title>
<description><![CDATA[<p>Rasmussen today reports that the percentage of people who cannot abide Obama is 24% bigger than the percentage of people who love him. This is the biggest deficit since I've been watching and I've been watching for a while.</p>

<p>Governor Brewer of Arizona has 60%; her Democrat rival 38%. And brother Mark has seen her interviewed on a national program and says that although she has good senses, she's an utter idiot.</p>

<p>Boxer is one point behind Fiorina in California; this isn't supposed to happen.</p>

<p>Harry Reid is even with his challenger. Also not supposed to happen.</p>

<p>Generic ballot: Republicans 48%, Democrats 36%. This matches the biggest lead that Republicans have ever had in this poll since it was started.</p>

<p>This morning I was listening to Fox News on the radio and someone talked about "Incoming Speaker John Boehner has said that he would repeal Obamacare or refuse to fund it." Now I admit that it's nice to anticipate but for God's sake don't let the Republicans think that it's going to be a walk because then someone will do something incredibly stupid and we'll have two more years of Pelosi et al. </p>

<p>Sure as hell the progressives will find some right-wing nutjob talking about burning school books which have a witch in them, and that will be boomed up until it seems as though the entire civil liberties of America are going to be burnt on a pile along with the book, and then the progressives would whip it up into a full-scale panic and chase the independents, on whom this election hangs.</p>

<p>For a graph showing how the Senate is trending Republican, <a href="<br />
http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/elections/election_2010/election_2010_senate_elections/election_2010_senate_balance_of_power">see this</a>.</p>

            <title>Mencken speaks on Obama</title>
<description><![CDATA[<p>Roger Kimball <a href="http://pajamasmedia.com/rogerkimball/2010/09/02/mencken-weighs-in/">wrote a bit</a> on the Chosen One's Iraq-Iran-Economy speech, calling it dreadful. An erudite writer sent him a clipping from H. L. Mencken on a speech by President Warren G. Harding:<blockquote>"of a string of wet sponges, it reminds me of tattered washing on the line; it reminds me of stale bean soup, of college yells, of dogs barking idiotically through endless nights. It is so bad that a sort of grandeur creeps into it. It drags itself out of a dark abysm (I was about to write abcess!) of pish, and crawls insanely up the topmost pinnacle of posh. It is rumble and bumble, it is flap and doodle. It is balder and dash."</blockquote></p>

<p>My brother gave me a signed first edition of a Mencken book. It's with my signed Buckley and O'Rourke, I had a signed copy of the Starr Report, signed by the author and by Ken Starr but it grew legs and walked away.</p>]]></description>

            <title>Gallup in the tank</title>
<description><![CDATA[<p>When I was in college I took a course, an introduction to probability and statistics, and it was the hardest one I ever had. The professor said that of the two major polling services, Gallup was better than Harris, and the implication was that Harris was liberal and that Harris polled for the paid result. Dr. Thompson was the only Republican professor I knew at Rice so he ought to have known.</p>

<p>Recently Gallup has found, no doubt on the dark side of the moon, evidence that the Democrats and Republicans are even on the generic ballot. No one else believes that.</p>

<p>Indeed Gallup has recently been so unreliable that they are doing themselves in.</p>

<p>Chuck Todd, of NBC, tweeted, "We specifically advise our colleagues to be leery of Gallup. Most, if not all, NBC news shows avoid."</p>

<p>Fancy that. NBC finding Gallup too biased.</p>]]></description>

            <title>Ted Nugent</title>
<description><![CDATA[<p>I'm not the world's biggest rock fan; it always sounded like sound and fury signifying nothing. So I don't keep up in general with the rock world.</p>

<p>This is not to say that I don't know and like Ted Nugent. He moved to a ranch around Waco , where he preserves game and hunts, and often has wounded soldiers from the Middle East over for a barbecue. Good man.</p>

<p>This may be an urban legend but having seen him interviewed, I believe it has the ring of truth to it.</p>

<p>Nugent was being interviewed by a liberal journalist, an animal rights activist. The discussion came around to deer hunting.</p>

<p>The journalist asked, "What do you think is the last thought in the head of a deer before you shoot him? Is it, 'Are you my friend?' or is it 'Are you the one who killed my brother?'"</p>

<p>Nugent replied, "Deer aren't capable of that kind of thinking. All they care about is, 'What am I going to eat next, who am I going to screw next, and can I run fast enough to get away.' They are very much like the Democrats in Congress."</p>

<p>The only thing that I can disagree with is the running away bit. Some of them are running away from Obama but I have yet to see a mass defection from their statist policies, and this is not something that I expect to see, for their essential nature is that of interfering bossiness.</p>

<p>It is a major character flaw but they don't see it that way. And any who are retired will be in denial of the reasons.</p>]]></description>

            <title>Labor Day delight</title>
<description><![CDATA[<p>I very seldom get to hear Rush; work interferes. Today though I did get to hear a bit and nearly drove off the road in delight.</p>

<p>Last year when Mr. Obama vacationed in Martha's Vineyard, a hot-selling item was a tee-shirt saying, "I vacationed with Obama." One store owner last year sold over 4,000.</p>

<p>This year his biggest seller is a tee-shirt with a picture of George W. Bush saying, "Miss me yet?"</p>

<p>Ohio, which is hardly a typical red state, was polled and that state would prefer Bush to be president over Obama 50 to 42%.</p>

<p>Even Democrat pollsters are bracing for a bad November. But they ought not worry yet. There's still time for the Republicans to screw it up.</p>]]></description>

            <title>More good news</title>
<description><![CDATA[<p>Polling is interesting, but I tend to think that the real mood of the nation is now best captured by comedians, normally left-wing people, making Obama jokes. And here are some of them:</p>

<p>The liberals are asking us to give Obama time. We agree . . . <br />
And I think 25 to life would be appropriate. <br />
--Jay Leno</p>

<p>America needs Obama-care like Nancy Pelosi needs <br />
a Halloween mask. <br />
--Jay Leno</p>

<p>Q: Have you heard about McDonald's' new Obama Value Meal?<br />
A: Order anything you like and the guy behind you has to pay for it. <br />
--Conan O'Brien</p>

<p>Q: What does Barack Obama call lunch with a convicted felon?<br />
A: A fund raiser. <br />
--Jay Leno</p>

<p>Q: What's the difference between Obama's cabinet and a penitentiary?<br />
A: One is filled with tax evaders, blackmailers, and threats <br />
to society. The other is for housing prisoners. <br />
--David Letterman</p>

<p>Q: If Nancy Pelosi and Obama were on a boat in the middle <br />
of the ocean and it started to sink, who would be saved?<br />
A: America! <br />
--Jimmy Fallon</p>

<p>Q: What's the difference between Obama and his dog, Bo?<br />
A: Bo has papers. <br />
--Jimmy Kimmel</p>

<p>Q: What was the most positive result of the "Cash for Clunkers" program?<br />
A: It took 95% of the Obama bumper stickers off the road. <br />
--David Letterman </p>

<p>And I heard Letterman crack a joke about this being Obama's last term. Yes indeed. Let's hope it is.</p>

<p>The <a href="http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/elections/election_2010/election_2010_senate_elections/election_2010_senate_balance_of_power">Senate is trending Republican</a>. I heard Dick Morris think that it might be a shift of 80 seats in the house but he's seldom right in his projections. Most interesting is Krauthammer's observation that the generic gap of 10% favors Republicans more than it ever has before.</p>

<p>Juan Williams is nearly incoherent these days, trying to defend the indefensible, and he's not quite the liar of Rubin who will brazenly tell one whopper after the other and refuse to back down. Now Williams is saying that the country is tired of Obama, not the Democrats.</p>

<p>In the last week or so the mood seems to have shifted from anti-incumbent to being more strongly anti-Democrat. I'd take either but prefer the latter.</p>

<p>Let's hope that Nancy et al keep marching off that cliff. And where are the hearings for Charlie Rangel? It's time for some Democrat sleaze to be aired. There's plenty of it.</p>]]></description>

            <title>The End of My Start</title>
<description><![CDATA[<p>I started my blogging career as a contributor to one of the early conservative blogs that wound up being an original Pajamas Media site (it isn't anymore). I was a pretty minor contributor and the blog didn't lend itself to local issues or personal blogging (which I never really got into). So, I decided to buy my own domain and write a local/personal blog.</p>

<p>As a contributor all I had to do was opine. Running my own domain and local/personal blog required me to make MoveableType play nice and write every couple of days! Regardless of my interest in the news of the day.</p>

<p>Needless to say, running my own personal blog wasn't for me, so I started commenting on a certain local blog and expounding on certain comments on my own blog when I thought the reply needed more background.</p>

<p>Then on August 11, 2006, I was asked to join the contributors of said local blog, and it truly was the beginning of the end of my personal blog. Today it is official. I've totally wiped the site, and in a couple of months when the domain and hosting contracts are up I will not renew.</p>

            <title>Woe is me</title>
<description><![CDATA[<p>Yesterday in a lightning, unforeseen trip, I traveled to Midland to buy a copy of Windows 7. I've never used Windows and wouldn't now except that I have an application which must have Windows. I admit that some of it is snobbery but in this town if it were known that I knew something about Windows, I'd be expected to fix Windows machines. This is <i>not</i> being in control of your life.</p>

<p>I wanted to put Windows 7 on my 17" MacBook Pro, which has all the connections that I need, but couldn't find a copy of Windows 7. Only upgrades.</p>

<p>This means of course that no one in Midland would be silly enough to buy a new copy of Windows 7. </p>

<p>So last night I bit the bullet and for the sake of convenience, ordered my very first Windows machine, an HP notebook. Which will serve.</p>

<p>But I'm going to have to isolate it at night in a safe lest all the Macs in the office suddenly start displaying the Blue Screen of Death.</p>

<p>I'll hunker in my foxhole to avoid the incoming.</p>]]></description>

            <title>Amateur psephology</title>
<description><![CDATA[<p>Scott Rasmussen send me an email every day, booming himself of course, but also interesting me. A good deal is naturally Schadenfreude and I'm serving up huge, big, heaping helpings of Schadenfreude every time I look at the polls for the upcoming election.</p>

<p>Very interesting is that in the race to replace the late, and completely unlamented, Senator Robert Byrd, the Grand Kleagle of the KKK. Senator Byrd was noted for being the biggest porker in the Senate, and not a single tear was shed in my house when he assumed room temperature. Even the cats Calvin and Hobbes laughed. It must be contagious. (Let's hope that it doesn't work the other way because a sandbox doesn't sound all that convenient.)</p>

<p>This West Virginia seat, from a state which has often trended Democrat, is now a race between the Republican, Joe Manchin, and the Democrat, John Raese. The Republican is eight points ahead of the Democrat. This is like snow in Honolulu. Recall that this is the state which also elected, over and over, Senator Jay Rockefeller, who for my money is the stupidest senator of all, including Patty Murray. And this is not a one-size-fits-all insult. Listen to Jay Rockefeller. I had no idea that so few generations of Rockefellers could breed the brains entirely out, like inbred European royalty 200 years ago.</p>

<p>Harry Reid is even with Sharon Angle in Nevada, and the drive-by media's been so successful in demonizing her that even normally sensible people are being spooked by some of Ms. Angle's comments.</p>

<p>Senator Boxer is only one point ahead of the Republican challenger, Carly Fiorina. </p>

<p>Meg Whitman, the Republican, is eight points above Jerry "Medfly" Brown for governor of California. I do not know Ms. Whitman but I have seen Governor Jerry Brown interviewed. Earth to Jerry!</p>

<p>And in the generic ballot, the Republicans are ahead more than the margin of error.</p>

<p>This is all well and good but the most interesting thing is that Joe Miller of Alaska <i>beat</i> Senator Lisa Murkoski in the GOP primary in Alaska. The credit goes to endorsements by Governors Palin and Huckabee. The Tea Party is reforming the GOP.</p>

<p>Republicans, here's your chance. If you're smart enough to take it, the GOP can be saved by the Tea Party. I have over and over found myself being disgusted by elected Republicans getting a "new-found respect" in Washington, which means of course that they've moved left. The Democrats, vile though their policies are, at least <i>tell</i> you what they're going to do.</p>

<p>Good. If the Tea Party is even somewhat successful in reforming the Republicans, I'll quit referring to the them as Get Out and Push, or Republicrats or Democrats Lite. </p>]]></description>

            <title>His skin=thin; our skin=in the game</title>
<description><![CDATA[<p>This is getting to be embarrassing even for a non-supporter of The Chosen One like yours truly. He is falling back to type under pressure. As we all do. </p>

<p>Fearless Leader is a thin skinned, socialist, elitist, Chicago machine politician who was way-not ready for the prime time national stage. No real surprise there for some of us. What is a surprise is his so becoming a victim. This looks real good to our remaining allies...</p>

<blockquote>"The facts are the facts. We went through some of this during the campaign -- there is a mechanism, a network of misinformation that in a new media era can get churned out there constantly," said a visibly annoyed Obama...</blockquote>

<p>Jessica's Well. Node 6.SJ.7 of the anti-obama network of misinformation. </p>

<title>I wonder what is afoot at the MDC?</title>
<description><![CDATA[<p>There are a couple of interesting things on the <a href="http://www.midlandtexasedc.org/agenda___minutes__reports">Agenda, Minutes and Reports</a> page at the MDC.</p>

<p>First, apparently there was a joint <a href="http://n.b5z.net/i/u/10000471/f/Aug_10_Special_Mtg.pdf">special meeting held on August 10</a> with the Midland City Council. The whole meeting was an executive session, to discuss economic development incentives, so the subject of that meeting is not open to public scrutiny.</p>

<p>Second, the <a href="http://n.b5z.net/i/u/10000471/f/August_27_Agenda.pdf">meeting this Friday</a> has some interesting agenda items:</p>

<blockquote><ul><li>Pursuant to Texas Government Code §551.101, the Board of Directors will hold an Executive Session which is closed to the public to discuss the following matters as permitted under the following Texas Government Code Sections:<br><br>
Section 551.087 Deliberation Regarding Economic Development Negotiations
Discuss business prospects that the Midland Development Corporation seeks to
have, locate, stay, or expand in or near the City of Midland, Texas and discuss
possible incentives, and discuss contract compliance on the part of businesses
with which the Midland Development Corporation has an existing contract.<br><br>
Section 551.129 Consultation with Attorney(s) from the law firm of Fulbright &
Jaworski L.L.P. by Telephone Conference Call Pursuant to Section 551.129, the Midland Development Corporation Board of Directors will consult with its attorney(s) from the Fulbright & Jaworski law firm by telephone conference call to discuss potential financing of a project.</li><br>
<li>Discuss legal issues related to projects.</li></ul></blockquote>

<p>I'm a bit concerned when the board has to meet with their high powered out of town lawyers to discuss the financing of a project. That usually means there is something quirky about how a deal is to be structured. I don't know about you, but the possibility of creative public financing of development deals makes me nervous.</p>

<p>The sad part is, most of this is happening in executive session, so we in the public are not privy to these proceedings.</p>]]></description>
